Conductive hearing loss

Conductive hearing loss is usually a structural or mechanical problem with the middle or outer ear. Sometimes it is temporary and can be removed, for example, by removing any remaining earwax in the ear canal. Sometimes, however, it is of a much more serious nature. In this case, it is most often the result of bone deformation in the ear. It may also happen that various diseases cause conductive hearing loss, for example, recurrent ear infections. Sometimes even surgery may be necessary. Who is especially at risk of conductive hearing loss? Who is particularly affected by this problem?

Conductive hearing loss

A medical condition under this name affects the external ear canal, which is somehow physically blocked and cannot conduct the sound wave. Often it is enough to clean the ear well and remove the blockage in the ear canal to restore hearing. Sometimes antibiotic therapy is also needed, and in extreme cases – surgery.

Who is affected by conductive hearing loss?

Conductive hearing loss is a fairly common condition. Many people may have experienced it and not even know it. Many home treatments for earache can also deal with less complicated cases of this disease. Who is most affected by this hearing loss?

– people with acute otitis media – this condition occurs quite often in children. It is crucial to start treating it as soon as possible because otitis is extremely painful and can also lead to permanent hearing loss in the case of children.

– people with exudative otitis media – this condition is accompanied by tinnitus and a feeling of fullness in the ear. It is quite painful, so it is important to start treatment as soon as possible,

– people with chronic otitis media – its most important symptom is long-term discharge from the ear. Very often, it is accompanied by perforation of the tympanic membrane. Occasionally, inflammatory changes, for example, cholesteatoma, appear in the ear canal.

– People suffering from otitis externa – the so-called swimmer’s ear – inflammation comes from the constant exposure of the ear to moisture. The result is the creation of conditions for the development of a bacterial or fungal infection.

– people with ear injuries – mechanical injuries may cause perforation of the eardrum,

– people with tumors – neoplastic changes (benign or malignant) may also appear in the ear canal, which may block its lumen.

How to diagnose?

You can assess if you have hearing loss based on your own observations. If you have to make an effort to hear what other people say to you, or if you find yourself screaming even when you don’t plan it at all … it’s high time you took your hearing test. A hearing professional will assess your hearing and see if you need treatment with a hearing test. The sooner you take action, the more likely you will avoid deafness. The comfort of you and your loved ones will increase, because they will not have to repeat the same to you. By detecting a problem in a timely manner, much greater consequences can be prevented.
