Cairns Crossovers: Why Queenslanders Love Basketball

Basketball

Basketball is one of Queensland’s favourite sports. Sure, we may be the rugby state, especially when you consider our impressive State of Origin win rate against the Blues. However, we also love a good hoopfest, too, especially as our beautiful weather permits a pickup game at the local court, or we can head inside and play at the local air-conditioned centre when things get a little too balmy!

What’s more, we proudly boast two awesome clubs that fans love to get around with every NBL season. With all this in mind, here are a few reasons why we Queenslanders love basketball:

It’s great to play indoors & out

Whether it’s Brisbane Bullets or Cairns Taipans basketball, we Queenslanders love our clubs and we love playing the game ourselves, too. What’s more, Queensland’s weather is perfect for playing ball, with warm and balmy days akin to those in other ball-mad places like Cali, Florida and Texas making the perfect outdoor weather to enjoy a pickup game in the park with friends.

But The Sunshine State is known for receiving a lot of sunshine and sometimes it can get a little too toasty to play in the park. Thankfully, our towns and cities have plenty of indoor centres where we can enjoy this great game in the comfort of an air-conditioned court.

You might have to be part of a registered team to enjoy this kind of ball, but it’s totally worth it, especially as you can get your mates together to enjoy a little healthy competition with some of the other local clubs!

It’s part of our love for sport

Queensland is a sport-loving state, with successful teams across all football codes and a love for surfing that puts us up there with Cali and Hawaii. We love our sport and we love the fact that we are blessed with great weather to play awesome outdoor sports like basketball.

This legendary game is deeply-ingrained in our state’s sporting makeup, with two awesome teams in the Brisbane Bullets and Cairns Taipans taking it to the other states and the Kiwi teams in the NBL. Ball is truly part of our state’s love for anything sport-related and will continue to be for some time!

It’s healthy exercise

Queensland is a health-conscious state and one of the ways we like to look after ourselves is through some healthy team sport. One of the best ways to ensure your health is to get together with your mates or join a club and play ball.

There are many ways this legendary sport is good for your health, including improving balance, endurance, speed and strength. What’s more, it’s one of the best things you can do for your mental health, as how can playing basketball in the beautiful Queensland sun not be good for your mood?

Yes, it’s one of the best ways to keep fit in The Sunshine State, and with positive benefits for both body and mind, it’s little wonder why it is so popular amongst kids and adults alike.

So, it’s plain to see why we Queenslanders love the hoopfest so much. It’s great for health whilst being an essential part of our state’s sporting history and being one of the best sports to play in our beautiful weather. Sure, we may always be the rugby state, but we have plenty of room for ball as well, and it is sure to stay that way!
